Your wedding will undoubtedly be a beautiful and romantic event, but I know that the planning that goes behind it can be a major headache. Here’s a wedding preparation checklist that you can use as a guide to help make getting ready for your wedding a breeze!
12 Months Before the Big Day
- Set a budget (and don’t forget to stick to it!)
Figuring out your wedding budget definitely won’t be easy. It will be one of the hardest, but one of the most important things you will have to decide on when planning your wedding. Don’t skip this crucial first step!
- Hire a wedding planner
To ease the burden of wedding planning, work with a pro! Not only will a wedding planner lighten the load on your plate, but they have insider, expert knowledge that you won’t be able to get anywhere else.
- Mark your calendar and set the date
There is no one way to go about choosing when to hold your wedding. Consider different factors like the symbolic significance of the date to you and your partner, logistical concerns like venue availability, and the luckiness of the date you choose!
10 Months Before the Big Day
- Choose a venue
Do you want an outdoor or an indoor wedding? Do you want to be surrounded by mountains, the beach, or the city? No matter where you choose to hold your wedding, be sure to book your venue ASAP!
- Choose the perfect theme
A theme will set the tone for your big day. Everything – from what you wear to what you eat – will be influenced by the theme of your wedding. Use your imagination and find the perfect theme that reflects both you and your partner.
8 Months Before the Big Day
- Choose your wedding party
Show your love to your closest family and friends by inviting them to be a part of your wedding party. You can even give your bridesmaids and your groomsmen gifts to show them just how much you appreciate them!
- Make the guest list
To keep you from feeling overwhelmed, read up on sweat-free ways to shorten your wedding guest list! After finalizing your list, send your invitations and wait for your guests to get back to you.
- Research and hire vendors (photographer, videographer, caterer, florist, DJ/band, etc.)
Know your options! Do your research before you hire vendors to make sure that you’re getting the most value for your money. You might even discover special deals and packages that are only offered for weddings!

6 Months Before the Big Day
- Get fitted for your wedding dress/suit
Grab a flute of champagne and get fitted for your wedding dress/suit. While you’re at it, select the bridesmaid dresses and groomsmen attire as well!
- Go cake tasting
More than anything else, this is what couples look forward to when planning their wedding. Indulge your sweet tooth with loads of cake!
- Choose your wedding rings
A wedding ring isn’t just a piece of jewelry. Spend some time finding the perfect rings that will forever act as physical reminders of your love, faithfulness, and commitment to your partner.
1 Month Before the Big Day
- Create a seating chart
By now, your guest list should already be finalized. Fixed seating at a wedding isn’t mandatory, but I recommend it as it makes the flow of the event a lot smoother.
- Practice for your first dance
Whether you’re going for a full-on choreographed number or just a simple slow dance, get your groove on by picking a wedding song and practicing for your first dance.
- Break in your wedding shoes
You might think it’s best to be careful and keep your wedding shoes in a shoebox until the very last minute, but you don’t want to your feet to be killing you during your special day!
1 Week Before the Big Day
- Have your final dress/suit fitting
Try on your dress or suit one last time to make sure everything fits just right. Twirl around or look yourself up and down in the mirror – I hope you’re looking and feeling your best!
- Have a salon and spa day
Pamper yourself at the salon and the spa. After a hectic period of wedding planning, you deserve some time for self-care.
