Some people will brush their teeth after each meal, however, the minimum recommended time is twice a day for at least two minutes of brushing.

Step 1
Holding the brush at a 45 degrees angle, start at the gum line with the inner and outer surfaces of the gums. Be sure to reach the gums in the back of your mouth as well. When brushing your gums, be sure to brush as gently as possible to prevent damages.
Step 2
Hold the toothbrush flat on your teeth and use a back and forth motion. Brush each side of your teeth on the top and bottom. Adding a few small circles with the bristles will allow the brush to get into more of those little areas between your teeth.
Step 3
Brush the inside of your front teeth on the top and bottom, then tilt the brush to clean the front of your teeth with an up and down motion.

If you find brushing your teeth boring for the whole 2 minutes, after you have mastered the steps you can listen to music while brushing. When teaching young children to use a manual toothbrush, be sure to choose the proper brush for their age. It is better to do a water run when going through the brushing steps for the first few times before applying toothpaste. This process will allow the child to get comfortable with how to use the toothbrush easier without making a mess.
